20 Cities in California with the Most Improved Crime Rate
California is one of the most diverse states in the country, not only in culture but in landscape. From the mountains and lush forests of northern California to the busy freeways and traffic jams of southern California and Los Angeles. With the border to Mexico on the south and many ports on the west coast, crime can be a problem in California. Many people from all over not only the country, but the world, come to see the sites and experience some of the best restaurants and attractions in the country. With all this visitor and through traffic, some towns put a major emphasis on lowering and keeping crime rates low.
Using data from 2007-2012 FBI Crime Reporting Statistics, we’ve uncovered twenty cities in California which have significantly decreased crime successfully.
The cities listed below have used some advanced police programs, services and techniques to help decrease their crime rate over a five year period. When looking through the data provided by the FBI, we have noticed their efforts have increased the quality of life for their citizens, as well as the safety of their neighborhoods.

1. Imperial, CA
In the southern most portion of the state of California is the city of Imperial, which tops our list of the most improved cities in the state. Just a few miles north of the Mexican border and minutes from some beautiful state parks and the Salton Sea, Imperial can see quite a bit of through traffic as it sits off one of the main roads headed both east and south to Mexico. The crime rate in Imperial was one of the lowest on our list to begin with, but according to data provided by the FBI, the Imperial police department has done a fantastic job curbing crime. Most notably, the property crime rate has taken a massive decline over the past five years.

2. Winters, CA
Just minutes from Lake Berryessa and west of the city of Sacramento is the town of Winters, California. Winters makes it near the top of our list of most improved cities in the state thanks to the hard by the local police department and the community the town has seen the overall crime rate take a massive decline. Utilizing programs like the neighborhood watch, both violent and property crime rates have take a significant drop over the past five years, which is a big reason why Winters makes it near the top of our list. Sitting just minutes outside of the big city, Winters is striving to offer a safe place to live while in the middle of everything.

3. Dixon, CA
Located on the western side of the state, Dixon sits just off the Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway and minutes to the southwest of Sacramento. Dixon has some major travel ways that run through the city, including the Union Pacific Railroad mainline, which can lead to higher crime rates with so many people coming and going. The local police department and community however have worked hard to bring the overall crime rate down to make it a safer community while it grows, despite all the major traffic coming through. Property crime has taken the biggest fall in Dixon thanks to things like the neighborhood watch program, as the community keeps a watchful eye on their growing city.

4. Gonzalez, CA
Just minutes from the Pacific Ocean and right at the base of some beautiful California mountains is the town of Gonzales. With the ocean nearby and things like the Andrew Molera State Park and Pinnacles National Park just minutes away, it’s easy to see why those in the community love the laid back setting of Gonzales and why the local police department has worked so diligently to bring down the crime rate. Coming in just inside the top five of our list of most improved cities in California based on data provided by the FBI, Gonzales has seen their property crime rate decline just over 50 percent over the last five years. With so many beautiful natural surroundings, it’s clear why that has taken priority.

5. Calistoga, CA
In the upper Napa Valley to the west of Lake Berryessa and just northeast of Santa Rosa is the town of Calistoga, which rounds out the top five on our list of most improved cities in California. Located in one of the most naturally beautiful regions in the state, it’s easy to see why Calistoga is a growing community and why the local police department has put an emphasis on bringing their crime rate down. Typically with a growing community you’ll see an uptick in crime, but over the last five years according to data provided by the FBI, Calistoga has seen their crime rate fall just over 50 percent, most notably a dip in violent crime by just over 80 percent.
